Swatch & Review: Keeki - Raspberry Punch

Jatketaan vesipohjaisten lakkojen testailua Keeki Pure & Simple -merkillä! :) Tässä on todella hyvä lahjavinkki lapselle tai nuorelle, sillä vesipohjaiset lakat ovat myrkyttömiä, ja ne säilyvät todella pitkään hyvinä. Jos lakka paksuuntuu, sekaan voi lisätä pari tippaa vettä niin johan taas pelittää! :) Lakka oli myös erittäin helppo levittää kuin myös siistiä pelkällä vedellä.

Laitoin kynsille 3 kerrosta. Kuvien kanssa kävi todella hassu juttu, nimittäin kärjet paistavat niistä läpi, mutta en huomannut "tosi elämässä" niiden paistavan läpi... 

Sisällä // Inside

Sävy: Tummansininen. Ehkä hieman lämpimämpi/vihertävämpi kuin kuvissa, muttei missään nimessä lähelläkään turkoosia.

Peittävyys: Erinomainen peittävyys. 2 kerrosta on jo ihan peittävä.

Levittyvyys: Levittyy todella hyvin. Ei raidoitu kuten Suncoatit. Olen "tavallisissa" lakoissa tavannut raidoittuvampia koostumuksia kuin tämä.

Kuivumisaika: Kuivuu todella nopeasti, mikä on tyypillistä vesipohjaisille lakoille. Lakkauksen jälkeen kannattaa kuitenkin odottaa tunti ennen kuin kädet voivat olla kosketuksissa veden kanssa. Liottamista ei myöskään suositella.

Koostumus: Englanniksi "biodegradable formula" eli tämä kai hajoaa täysin luonnossa. :D Ohuen oloista, muttei vaikuttanut levittyvyyteen. Jos lakka kuivahtaa, kannattaa lisätä pari tippaa vettä, ja lakasta tulee kuin uusi!

Poistaminen: Suositellaan Keekin omaa kynsilakanpoistoainetta, mutta tämä lähtee ihan helposti tavallisella, asetonittomallakin kynsilakanpoistoaineella. Myös vedessä liottelu irrottaa lakkaa. Lakka lähtee "lastuina" omaa kynttä kuitenkaan vaurioittamatta.

Kestävyys: Paljon huonompi kuin Suncoatin lakoissa. Jo seuraavana aamuna jouduin laittamaan yhteen kynnen kulmaan uuden kerroksen, sillä lakasta oli lohjennut pala pois. Lakat olivat käsissäni 2 päivää ja 1 hiustenpesun. Tämä lähtee sellaisina palasina pois eikä yhtenä kerroksena kuten Suncoat Girl. Vähän niin kuin sipulin kuori "halkeilee" pois niin tälle käy samalla tavalla. Lakkakerros on muuten ihan yhtä ohutta kuin sipulin kuori vaikka laitoin 3 kerrosta. Tavalliset lakat tekevät paljon paksumpia kerroksia.

Tein tälläiset kukkakynnet Lakkaushaaste-fabo-ryhmään. Se on kynsiryhmä, jonka kynsiteema vaihtuu viikoittain. Sain samalla mainion mahdollisuuden toteuttaa jo pitkään ajatuksissa pyörineen helpon kukka-tutoriaalin! Tähän tarvitset vain hammastikun, nuppineulan, dotting toolin ja kynsilakkaa! Sinun ei tarvitse ostaa erikseen akryylivärejä tai mitään muutakaan. Ohjeetkin ovat niin helpot, että syön vaikka oikean käteni, jos tämä ei teiltä onnistu. :D 

Here's a simple flower nail art tutorial with a dotting tool. I did these nails for a nail polish group on Facebook. We have a weekly theme, and this one was flowers! I hope you'll enjoy this tutorial. It's really simple, you don't need to buy any fancy stuff for it, and it's fast to do too! :)

Tarvitset:

• Dotting tool, hammastikku, nuppineula, tms.
• kynsilakkaa
• talouspaperia, wc-paprua, tms.

Ohjeet:

Tämä on todella helppo ohje, jota voi varioida mieleisekseen. Kukkien terälehdet voi jättää joko pyöreiksi, suipoiksi, sisältä tyhjiksi; keskipisteen voi tehdä, olla tekemättä, tai tehdä monena pienenä pisteenä. Kokeile eri tapoja ja ihastu! ;)

1. Tee 5 pistettä tikullasi. Pyyhi tikku puhtaaksi talouspaperiin. Jos tahdot, voit jättää kukkasi pyöreälehtiseksi.
2. Suiponna keskikohtaa kohti vetämällä lakkaa puhtaalla tikun päällä. Voit käyttää pienempää tikkua, jotta olisi helpompi osua oikeaan kohtaan.
3. Jos tahdot keskeltä "onttoja" terälehtiä, liikuta tikkua edestakaisin niin, että lakka pakkautuu reunoille ja tyhjenee keskeltä. Puhdista tikkua tarvittaessa. Kuva 3. vasemmanpuoleinen kukka.
4. Lisää keskipiste/keskipisteet. Ja valmista tuli! 

What you'll need:

• dotting tool, toothpick, a pin, etc.
• nail polish
• tissue paper, toilet paper, etc.

Method:

This is a really easy tutorial that you can change around to suit your needs. You can make either round, pointed or even hollow petals; with or without pistils. Try them all and find the best one for you! ;)

1. Make 5 dots with a dotting tool. Wipe your tool clean with some tissue paper. You can leave your petals round, or...
2. Pull the dots out toward the center with a dotting tool. This will give you pointed petals. You can use a smaller dotting tool for this if you want, or...
3. Move your dotting tool back and forth in your pointed petals. Clean your dotting tool in between strokes. This will make the petals "hollow" in the middle. Picture 3, flower on the left.
4. Add one or more pistils if you like. And you're done! :D

Tutorial: How to make your own nail polish

Here's a super fun tutorial! I'll explain how to make your own nail polish, a.k.a. franken polish, and share some helpful tips. :) If you have any questions, you know what to do, enjoy!

Products used:

• nail polish base: If you're using glitter, make sure it's glitter suspending nail polish base. If you can't get glitter suspending nail polish base, you can buy Cab-O-Sil, a silica powder, that will thicken your polish enough to suspend glitter. I used water based glitter suspending nail polish (whoa, kinda long word!) that dries clear and has steel balls in it for mixing. 
• color: This can be basically anything that's in powder or pressed form, e.g. mica, pigment, eye shadow, mineral make-up, blush, bronzer, anything! I'm using mica.
• glitter: Make sure it's solvent resistant glitter because regular glitter bleeds. This means, that e.g. adding red glitter into clear nail polish will turn your clear nail polish into a sort of red and your glitter will have lost all of its red color on the following day, usually silver is the "base" color for all glitters. I haven't tested if regular glitter works with water based nail polish but I think it would. Since water based nail polish doesn't have harmful solvents in it that could make glitter bleed. I used solvent resistant hologram glitter, purple, silver and white.
• funnel: I'll show you how to make one from paper since I don't own one small enough.
• small spoon: Something small to spoon glitter and color, e.g. teaspoon handle.
• scissors
• tape
• tooth pick or something small to mix glitter and color into your nail polish
• paper towel
• plastic bag
• gloves and a mask: Optional. I don't like using them.

Method:

1. Pull your hair and sleeves up. I usually wear a home shirt that I won't mind getting dirty. This might get messy.

2. Cut approximately 10 pieces of tape. This will help you a lot in the following steps!

3. Cut your plastic bag open as your table cloth. It'll be easy to clean up by just rolling it up! Pull the plastic bag tight and attach it with pieces of tape.

4. Let's make the funnel next. Cut out a square 10 x 10cm out of paper. Make a cut from one corner to the center. Roll it tightly into a funnel. Tape it. Even out the sides. Tape the tip of the funnel, then cut a small piece of the tip off. This will prevent your funnel from getting too wet. Thus, you won't have to make a new funnel every time you add color or glitter.

5. Put the funnel into the nail polish bottle. If the funnel won't stay upright, use some tape.

6. Now spoon in some color. Be careful, it might get really messy!

7. Take the funnel out and mix in the color with a tooth pick. If you skip this and put the brush right into the bottle, all the color is going to stick onto the brush which will make mixing the color in really difficult and time consuming. 

8. After mixing, put the tooth pick on top of paper towel. This way, you'll see where the messy color is and you won't get it on your arms/shirt. 

9. Repeat with glitter.

10. And you're ready! :)

I bought my franken set from Etsy. It came with 5 water based glitter suspending nail polish bottles, different colored micas, a little bit of different glitters (not in the pictures), a mask, gloves, tooth picks, a spoon and instructions. This nail polish dries clear. It needs a topcoat, otherwise it would just come off when you're washing your hands. I bought my glitters from Etsy too.

Kokeilin one strokea kolmatta kertaa ja onnistuin aika hyvin mielestäni! :) Jee! Olisi kiva harjoitella tätä lisää, jotta voisin joskus olla supernopea tässä tyylissä. Sitten en tekisi mitään muuta paitsi one strokea :P Koska minulla ei ole vesipohjaista päällyslakkaa, päätin laittaa päällyslakaksi Piggy Paintin pimeässä hohtavaa lakkaa, mutta se teki kuvioista vähän maitomaiset (pikkurilli), joten loppusormiin laitoin INM pikakuivattajaa.

I tried one stroke for the third time, and I think I did a pretty good job ! :) I would love to practice this more so I'd get really fast and good at it. Then I'd never do anything else except one stroke manicures :P Since I don't have a water based nail polish top coat, I decided to use Piggy Paint's Glows-in-The-Dark nail polish but it left a whitish layer (pinkie). So for the rest of my fingers, I used INM Out The Door top coat.

So I decided to try stamping with water based nail polishes but, unfortunately, it didn't turn out like I'd hoped...

Vesipohjaiset lakat käyttäytyivät ihan eri tavalla kuin perus-kynsilakat! Ensinnäkin vesipohjaiset lakat eivät kuivuneet ja muodostaneet kalvoa kuten tavalliset kynsilakat vaan ne pysyivät märkinä! Tämä yllätti minut ihan täysin, sillä kynsillä vesipohjaiset lakat kuivuvat paljon nopeammin kuin tavalliset lakat. Noh, tämä kuivumattomuus ja kalvonmuodostuksen puute lakan pinnalla aiheutti kuvioiden suttaantumista. Samalla kuviolla stamperissa psytyi leimaamaan myös pariin otteeseen. Alhaalla sama kuvio, jolla olen leimannut kolme kertaa. Testeissäni tokasta leimauksesta tuli tarkempi kuva kynsille kuin ekasta. Peukku ja pikkurilli ovat leimattu tokalla, etu- ja keskisormi leimattu ekalla. Nimettömän lakka on puolestaan liian vaaleaa.

Water based nail polishes act completely different from regular nail polish! They don't dry or keep their shape which causes them to get smudged really easily. Another thing I noticed was that you can use the same stamp many times. In the picture below I've used the same stamp thrice. Since the second stamp has the clearest picture, I used it for my thumb and pinkie. My index and middle finger got the first stamps, and they're obviously more messy looking. The ring finger color, Grape Soda, is too light on top of the yellow Sunflower.

Tulipa taas testailtua vesipohjaista lakkaa! Tällä kertaa kynsille pääsi Suncoat Girl-merkkinen lakka, sävy Sunflower. Tämä on Suncoatin "tytöille" suunnattu linja, ja värit ovat sen mukaisesti kirkkaampia kuin esimerkiksi Suncoatin long-lasting lakoissa. Olen jo ikuisuuden etsinyt täydellistä keltaista, ei pastellista, ei cremeä, ei liian banaanista, vaan kirkkaankeltaista! Tämä lakka täyttää toiveeni tietynlaisissa valaistuksissa. :) Alla näette kuvista valaistuksen aiheuttamat erot. Toinen asia, mikä kuvissa hämää itseäni, on kynnen valkoisen ja vaaleanpunaisen osan erottuvuus! Todellisuudessa tätä ei huomaa, mutta jostain syystä kuvissa se näkyy todella selkeästi, enkä osaa sanoa, onko valaistukseni pielessä vai mikä mättää... Mutta ehkä tämä on vain niitä ongelmia, että kuvissa näyttää kamalalta ja tosielämässä ihanalta.

This time I tested Suncoat Girl water based nail polish. This is a line targeted towards younger girls. Naturally, the available nail polish colors are more girlish too. I've been looking for a perfect yellow, not too creme, not too banana-ish, bright enough, not greenish, and this polish fulfills my wishes in certain lighting. Pictures below.

+ helpompi poistaa kuin Suncoatin long-lasting lakka: poisto liottamalla kynsiä vedessä vähintään 3min, sitten lakan repiminen pois kynsiltä

- jos ei liottanut kynsiä vedessä tarpeeksi pitkään, niin poisto oli hankalampaa ja saattoi täten vahingoittaa kynnen ylimpiä kerroksia

Pros and cons:

+ pros are the same as with Suncoat long-lasting line and water-based nail polishes in general

+ easier to remove than Suncoat long-lasting polish (just soak in water for 3 minutes, then peel off)

- if you didn't soak nails long enough in water, the peeling off process might damage your top most nail layers

Olin ihan yllättynyt, kuinka kärjet eivät näytä yhtään kärsineiltä hiustenpesun jälkeen toisin kuin Suncoatin long-lasting lakan kanssa kävi.

I was really surprised at how the tips don't look worn out at all! Whereas Suncoat long-lasting nail polish did look worn out at this point...

Nyt näkyy kärjissä pientä kulumaa. 

Vaikka tämän kuvan perusteella voisi luulla, että Suncoat Girl pysyy paremmin kuin Suncoat long-lasting lakat, näin ei välttämättä ole. Sisäinen tiedemieheni kokee kynsilakkakokeiluni erittäin epäoikeudenmukaisiksi, koska oikeastihan kokeissa on tehtävä useampia toistoja, jos tahtoo luotettavia tuloksia. ;) Tämän lakan parempaan pysyvyyteen on voinut vaikuttaa mm. se, että kynteni pinta on ollut levityshetkellä kuivempi ja vähemmän rasvainen. Täten lakka on tarttunut kynteeni tiukemmin, eikä se ole lähtenyt lohkeilemaan irti kynsinauhojen läheisyydestä tai kärjistä.

Some tip wear. 

Even though according to these pictures you might think that Suncoat Girl has better lasting power than Suncoat long-lasting nail polishes, don't be fooled! For reliable results you need to repeat the experiment many times, which I haven't done here. One reason why this polish has stayed on better than Suncoat long-lasting nail polish, might be due to my nail beds being cleaner and less oily when I applied it. Thus, this nail polish has adhered more strongly on my nails.

Tässäpä teille ensimmäinen uhri vesipohjaisista kynsilakoistani sävyssä 25 Desert Sunset! Jos aihe ei ole vielä tuttu, niin käy tsekkaamassa aikasempi tekstini vesipohjaisista kynsilakoista. 

Kyseessä on kanadalaisen Suncoatin lakka, joka kuuluu "long lasting" linjaan eli pitäisi kestää hyvin kynsillä. Ja voi pojat, kyllähän tää kesti! Itseasiassa jopa niin hyvin, että tän poistaminen oli aikamoista urakointia niin luonnonmukaisella kynsilakanpoistoaineella kuin asetonittomalla ja asetonillisellakin. Suncoatilla on muuten mielestäni laadukkaimmat lakat sekä paras ja laajin valikoima näitä vesipohjaisia lakkoja kaikista vesipohjaisten lakkojen merkeistä mitä oon koklannut/löytänyt.

Vesipohjaiselle lakalle tyypillisesti tää vaati 3 kerrosta peittääkseen kunnolla, muttei ollenkaan aluslakkaa! En myöskään laittanut päällyslakkaa, jonka käyttö olis varmasti ollut fiksua, koska kärjet kuluivat melkein heti. Tätä kärkien kulumista mulla tapahtuu tosin ihan normilakkojenkin kanssa, jos en käytä päällyslakkaa, joten en koe tämän ominaisuuden olevan iso miinus. 

Plussat ja miinukset:

+ ei vaadi aluslakkaa, ei värjää kynsiä eikä kuivata niitä (kuten normilakka tekisi)

+ luonnonmukaisempi vaihtoehto niin itsellesi kuin ympäristöllekin

+ jos lakkaat vahingossa huti -> voit poistaa pelkällä vedellä (täytyy kuitenkin tehdä heti lakkaamisen jälkeen ennen kuin lakka ehtii kuivua ja kovettua kestäväksi)

+ kuivui sekunneissa kosketuskuivaksi jopa useammalla kerroksella! Pullon kylki sanoo, ettei saisi liottaa kynsiä vedessä 20 tunnin sisällä lakkauksesta. Pesin kuitenkin huoletta käsiä 40 minuutin kuluttua ja kävin suihkussa + pesin hiukset heti 20 tunnin tultua täyteen eikä lakkaus "sulanut" pois :)

+ ei haise yhtään 

+ paksua koostumusta voi laimentaa pelkällä vedellä, kannattaa lisätä pari tippaa kerrallaan

- ei tasoitu itsestään kuten normilakka, viirut jäävät näkyviin (tämän tosin huomasi vain todella läheltä)

- jos ei pitänyt lakkapullon suuaukkoa puhtaana lakkauksen aikana (ja muista myös putsata lakkauksen jälkeen), niin kuivuneita lakan palasia meni vahingossa sudin mukana takaisin pulloon, josta ne päätyivät kynnelle -> klimppejä kynnellä; ei paljoa, mutta itseäni häiritsi :P

- näissä Suncoatin long-lasting lakoissa on tarjolla vain "aikuisempia" sävyjä :P

+- oli vaikea poistaa -> erinomainen pysyvyys!

Yhteenveto:

Muista pitää suuaukko puhtaana lakkauksen aikana ja jälkeen! Tämä koskee myös normilakkoja. Saat lakkapullon suljettua kunnolla eikä lakka pääse kuivahtamaan niin nopeasti. :)

6 päivän ja 2 hiustenpesun jälkeen:

kärjissä ei suurta muutosta, lakka lähtenyt myös kuoriutumaan kynsinauhojen läheltä.

I tried Suncoat's long lasting water based nail polish in 25 Desert Sunset. If you're not familiar with water based nail polishes, you can read my previous entry here. 

Suncoat is a Canadian brand that produces very high quality water based nail polishes. From all the water based nail polish brands I've come across, it definitely has the largest selection and variety for both adults and kids. :) This particular nail polish that I tried is from their long-lasting line, and boy did it last! I tried removing this with both natural nail polish remover, non-acetone and acetone nail polish remover and with all of these, it took quite some time.

Like most water based nail polishes and regular nail polishes, this too required 3 coats for perfect coverage. But no base coat at all! I didn't use top coat either which probably would've prevented a lot of tip wear but my tips get worn with regular nail polish too if I skip top coat... So this wasn't a huge minus.

Pros and cons:

+ doesn't require base coat, doesn't color your nails, doesn't dry up your nails (like regular polish would)

+ a more natural choice for both you and the environment

+ if you don't have a steady hand, no worries! You can clean up the excess nail polish with just plain water! Remember to do this while the polish is still wet, not after the polish has dried up and hardened. 

+ literally dried in seconds to touch dry (you can touch it but not hit it) even with three coats! The bottle says not to soak your hands before 20 hours after putting polish on. I washed my hands after 40 minutes and my hair right after 20 hours, and the polish looked as good as new! It didn't "melt" away like regular water based nail polishes.

+ doesn't smell bad at all

+ if you think the consistency is too thick, you can add a few drops of water to thin it down

- doesn't even out itself like regular nail polish does, but this was only noticeable from very close

- I didn't remember to keep the nozzle of the bottle clean at first, so sometimes when I was putting my brush back into the bottle, it would take some of the dried polish on the nozzle into the bottle. Then while putting polish on, this would leave tiny, dried polish bits on my nails. Just remember to keep the nozzle clean and you'll avoid this :) I didn't get many bits but the few I got really bothered the perfectionist in me...

- Suncoat long lasting line only carries more mature shades... :P

+- difficult to remove -> stayed on really well!

Overall:

Remember to keep your nozzle clean! This way you'll avoid dried bits of polish ending up on your nails. Keeping your nozzles clean also applies to regular nail polishes! This way you can close your bottle better which prevents your nail polish from drying and becoming thick.

some tip wear + polish has started to peel near the cuticles.

Water-based nail polishes

What are they?
Water-based nail polish is made with water so when you put it on your nails, the fumes that come off are basically water vapour. That's why water-based nail polish is virtually odor free! Water isn't toxic either (unless you drown in it or decide to drink at least 5 litres of water, which would take you to the hospital for a stomach lavage)!

Regular nail polish, on the other hand, is toxic (not that I recommend eating/drinking water based nail polish either). It has many bad ingredients that can cause, e.g. disruptions in your hormonal functions, infertility, cancer, brain dysfunctions, damage to your lungs, headaches, migraines and all sorts of awful stuff! Even though you might think that nail polish doesn't absorb through your nails, in my opinion it does. It makes your nails yellow and it dries them which can cause nails to be brittle etc. But I find nails polish fumes to be even more dangerous. They go straight into your lungs where they can either accumulate (which could lead to blocking some vital functions of your lungs) or absorb into your bloodstream. Lungs have sh*tloads of alveolis that multiply your lungs's surface area by probably billions, so that it's easier to exchange materials with your bloodstream. You see my point? :D 

Why is it better than regular nail polish?
- not toxic, even babies and pets can use it!
- environmental friendly (regular nail polish is toxic waste, just like wall paints)
- some brands come off with plain alcohol or after soaking in water
- if the polish thickens, just add a few drops of water, and you're good to go!
- doesn't smell bad
- no need for base coat because it doesn't make your nails yellow
- doesn't dry your nails (painting regular nail polish and removing it does dry your nails)
- not flammable

But...
- water based nail polish doesn't work in water marbling, it's like mixing water colors with water
- you can't wash your hands for 20 minutes after you've put it on but it becomes "touch dry" after a few minutes 
- I found them to be really difficult to apply smoothly, almost always leaving an uneven surface
- usually quite thin consistency, needs 3 coats
- didn't last very long on my nails (without topcoat), some lasted only 2-3days, others did a little bit better with 5 days

Overall
So, if you're a conscious consumer, respect our planet and especially your own health, water based nail polish is your choice!

Splatter nails glow in the dark

I did splatter nails which I've been dying to do for a while now! 

On my leftie, I put Piggy Paint's Glows in The Dark water-based nail polish on top of the white and splattered different colors on top. You can notice how the white color doesn't look as white as my right hand.

Vasemman käden kynsien valkoisen värin päälle laitoin Piggy Paintin pimeässä hohtavaa lakkaa, ja tämän päälle splätterit. Voitte vertailla kuvista, kuinka vasemman käden valkoinen väri ei ole yhtä valkoinen kuin oikean käden, koska pimeässä hohtava lakka on hieman vihertäväkellertävää. :P
